What Do Bedbugs Look Like And When Are They Most Active?

by Thomas Proctor

Bed bugs are tiny insects which are wingless and they nourish themselves solely on the blood of animals and humans. Bedbugs look for people as well as animals, usually at night time when they are sleeping, and they painlessly draw some blood.

How do bedbugs look? Although they are very small the normal human eye is able to see them. It is said that they are about the size of your pinky nail and come in two different colors which are sometimes a reddish color and sometimes a brownish color.

They will suck on human or animal blood whenever they get a chance. An adult bedbug measures roughly one quarter of an inch long, and some people will mistake an adult bedbug for a cockroach.

Many people are uncertain of the appearance of these nasty pests. When they first appear, bed bugs are known as nymphs. The appearance of a nymph is similar to its adult counterpart, only somewhat lighter and reduced in size. It is important to remember that bed bugs have no wings, and cannot fly. However, they can quickly roam across flat surfaces, and climb walls and ceilings.

The mother bedbug will choose her nests carefully. Usually she will lay about five eggs a day in many locations, including carpets and bed linens. Over her life she might lay five hundred eggs. These eggs are too small to be seen without a microscope. They are small and tend to be a white or off-white color. They are also very sticky and can be tracked around the house if stepped on. It only takes a few weeks from an egg hatching for the nymph to become a full-fledged adult bedbug.

Generally, you will find bedbugs nearby the source of food. In this case, that doesn't mean your kitchen. It means your bed. To find evidence of these critters, check for small dark blood stains or specks of bug waste near your mattress. You should also check the rug and the carpet for bugs. If you search for the bugs in all their hiding places, you should be able to avoid the ugly annoyance of bedbug bites.

When bed bugs get opportunity they feed on human as well as animal blood. So what do bedbugs look like, you ask? They are roughly as large as the fingernail on your pinky. And they will either have a red or a brown hue. Adult bedbugs usually measure around 1/4 of an inch. Sometimes they are mistaken by some people for cockroaches. Bedbugs are characteristically found close to the place of food. That means your bed. Look for blood stains which are dark in color and bedbug waste around the mattress. If you inspect all these places carefully, then you can avoid bedbug bites.
